Oral Epics are the epics through
oral narrative forms and are important in understanding the Folk culture of a
Community. “Oral Epics” have two functional dimensions. There are narrative performances and ritual
performances. This reflects the
folk-life of the communities to which the Epic belonged to. For example, Junjappa Epic reflects the
cultural life of customs and traditions of Kadugollas of Karnataka whereas
Halumatha Kavya reflected those of Kurubas of Karnataka.
This international seminar is intended to provide a discussion
forum for analyses of the Oral Epics of
India and its neighbouring countries.
The caste system in India demanded the conscious creation of caste
myths. The conflict between pastoralists
and agriculturists, land labourers and land owners araising out of issues
between them and others and the consequent compromises made thereafter are
well-reflected in such oral epics. Many a
time, the belief systems, customs and practices are reflected herewith powerful
and commanding voices. The narration
helps in re-establishing the value system in the Society. Social Harmony and inter dependency of the
castes or communities form central message of the oral epic. The case in other neighbouring countries are
to be explore`d to have better understanding of culture complexities therewith.
The developing societies in India and neighbouring countries are
facing Generation shocks in the era
of Globalisation. The folklorists have a
challenge in addressing the dichotomous situations emerge out of the usage of
electronic gadgets and on the other hand the traditional folk equipments. For
instance, the people sitting in the bullock carts are looking at the aeroplanes
flying above their head.
The participants are expected to discuss multifaceted socio- cultural
issues in this event. Before, getting in to such discussions, valid data is to
be collected. This seminar provides
platform to share the Data and to have an inquiry into issues related. The study of oral Epics is never to be
considered as study of some good old phrases sung by the priests of
underdeveloped communities. They have
rich cultural treasure houses in them.
Unearthing such treasure and looking for suggestions for incorporating
re-defined value systems in the contemporary society is the main focus of this
venture.
